iteration & repetition

I think it’s a good thing as an artist to avoid being pigeonholed into any one style. One thing I strive for in my work is to always be expanding my range of production, as opposed to being “that guy who does that thing.” Few things delight me more than shattering other people’s expectations, except maybe responding to my critics by moving even further in the same direction, or by outdoing them in whatever it was they thought they liked better than what I did. The most satisfying result is being able to come up with a range of styles that are all uniquely and identifiably my own, yet still worlds apart. You only live once, so why would you want to spend your whole life committed to doing one thing the same way?

Just messing around today at Hinckley Pottery. I have no idea if this one will even survive, but I figured I’d go ahead and get a record of its existence.

Super big thanks to everyone who showed up to my pottery show! It was a great success, and the proceeds will go toward completing my Artomatic display. Below here you can see what I’ve got so far. The show opens May 18 and runs through June 23 at 1851 Bell St. in Crystal City, Virginia, a block away from the Crystal City metro station. You can find all the relevant info at artomatic.org. I hope to see you all there!

art show frenzy

Hi all,

If you’ve been following along here and are interested in what you see, you should know my work will be on display in a couple of different venues in the near future.

Firstly, I’ll be participating in Hinckley Pottery’s annual student show on Sunday, May 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The show will be held at the studio at 1707 Kalorama Road, at the corner of 17th and Kalorama, Northwest, in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. I and 29 other potters will be putting a collection of our best work on display and up for sale. It’s a great chance to stop in to see and even purchase some of the work you’ve seen photographed or appearing in my collages here as well as many other pieces in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Stop in and find the perfect gift for Mom, yourself, that special someone or anyone at all, or feel free to just come in and browse and enjoy the free food and drink!

Second, I will be participating in the annual Artomatic festival from May 18th until June 23rd at 1851 S. Bell Street in Crystal City, Virginia, along with hundreds of other artists from around the DC area. I just completed my site selection for the event, and I have to say I got some pretty prime real estate, for what it’s worth. Stop by and check out prints of some of the collages you see here and a few other surprises. Even if you think you’ve seen it all, I guarantee there’s at least something everybody hasn’t seen yet. It’ll definitely be worth your while to stop in and see everything on display and meet and check out work from the many other participants. It’s my first time putting these on display so I’m super psyched and working like mad to get everything ready in time! More info at artomatic.org.

Hope to see you there.

fare thee well…

sadly, these puppies won’t get to be in the show with me in a few weeks, but they can be replaced in short order no doubt. off to a new home in Charlottesville, VA for what I happen to think is a very fair price.

for 90 degree days in april

“So rather than be just another mindless religious robot, mindlessly and aimlessly and blindly believing that all of this is in the hands of some spooky incompetent father figure who doesn’t give a shit, I decided to look around for something else to worship. Something I could really count on.

And immediately, I thought of the sun. Happened like that. Overnight I became a sun-worshipper. Well, not overnight, you can’t see the sun at night. But first thing the next morning, I became a sun-worshipper. Several reasons. First of all, I can see the sun, okay? Unlike some other gods I could mention, I can actually see the sun. I’m big on that. If I can see something, I don’t know, it kind of helps the credibility along, you know? So everyday I can see the sun, as it gives me everything I need; heat, light, food, flowers in the park, reflections on the lake, an occasional skin cancer, but hey. At least there are no crucifixions, and we’re not setting people on fire simply because they don’t agree with us.”

RETROACTIVE EDIT FOR DISCLAIMER:

I’m not a misogynist. This is about pretty girls who think they’re hot shit because they’re pretty and that this is the standard by which people should be judged. It cheapens everyone because pretty, bratty girls are a dime a dozen, just like “hot” douchebag f(r)at guys. I’m sure you could just as easily make a collage of douchehat dudes, but I made this one because that’s just my perspective.

that said,
you still just lost it.
